Sponge cake (any recipe will do)
4 egg whites
⅛ t cream of tartar
½ c sugar
1 qt ice cream, frozen hard
Preheat the oven to 450°. Choose a board that will fit into your oven, wet it on both sides, then shake off excess water. Put a piece of brown paper on top of the board. Place the cake on it. Put the egg whites and cream of tartar in a bowl and beat until foamy. Slowly add the sugar and continue to beat until stiff but not dry. Cut the ice cream in slices to cover the cake, leaving a ½-inch rim all around. Cover completely with the meringue. Lightly brown in oven for about 5 min. Serve at once!
