1½ c sugar
½ c shortening
2 eggs
¼ c molasses
1 t soda dissolved in ¼ c cold water
2½ c flour
½ t each: cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice
½ t salt
1 c raisins, stoned and cut

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs. Add molasses. Add soda in water. Sift flour, spices and salt. Add flour mixture except ½ c. Mix raisins with a little flour. Add floured raisins. Texture of batter should be like stiff cake batter (add more flour if necessary). Flatten a little on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350° for about 8-10 minutes.

Note: According to Mimi, this recipe comes from Clarissa (Clara) Spaulding Barrett.
