Mom’s Corn Bread

1 c yellow cornmeal
½ c flour
½ c sugar
2 t baking powder
¾ t salt
1 egg, beaten
½ c milk
2 T corn oil

Mix cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in large bowl. Mix egg, milk and corn oil, and stir into dry ingredients quickly and carelessly, no more. Pour batter into buttered 8-in sq. pan. Bake in preheated 450° oven for about 20 minutes. Serve hot. Makes 9 to 16 squares.
